A new, unshaped tactical beret requires proper breaking-in to achieve a sharp, low-profile silhouette that stays clear of optics and helmet straps. Follow this official quartermaster field molding procedure.

Phase I: Preparation & Depilling

Before immersion, inspect the outer felt crown for excess fluff or surface pilling. Using a safety razor or fabric shaver, lightly sweep the outer felt layer in uniform downward strokes. This creates a smooth finish that sheds rainwater efficiently.

Phase II: Hot & Cold Water Molding

  1. Step 1: Submerge the wool crown in warm-to-hot water (do NOT use boiling water, as this destroys natural lanolin retention). Ensure the leather sweatband remains largely dry to avoid leather stiffening.
  2. Step 2: Wring out excess moisture gently without twisting or warping the underlying crown seam.
  3. Step 3: Place the damp beret upon your head. Adjust the leather sweatband so it sits approximately 1 inch above your eyebrows. Pull the excess crown down toward the right side and rear, smoothing out all folds flat against your skull.
  4. Step 4: Wear the beret continuously for 45 to 60 minutes while it air dries, allowing the wool matrix to set around your head geometry.

Phase III: Long-Term Maintenance

Never dry a tactical wool beret on an active heat register, stove top, or in a high-heat tumble dryer. Always allow natural air drying at room temperature. Periodically treat the leather sweatband with natural mink oil or beeswax conditioner to prevent salt cracking from sweat accumulation.
